Calkins was born in Lawrenceville, St. Lawrence County, New York, January 2, 1851. His parents, with George and two other children, one 16 years old, and one 8 years old, moved to the township of Easton, this county, in June 1851, George being about six months old. From that time until October 1898, he lived on the old homestead farm in Easton. At last date he moved into city of Ionia, where he lived about four years, except for a few months in township of Orleans. He returned to Easton from Ionia city in November 1902, to the farm where he died, known as the Watson C. Snell farm, located on section 5. He died November 3, 1905, after nearly three weeks of intense suffering, passing out of this life into that dreamless sleep known as the “Great Beyond,” as peacefully as the slumber of a little child.
