James Callow Dead. James Callow, pioneer hotel man of this city, died Monday afternoon at the home of his son, Arthur E. Callow, 512 West Lincoln avenue, where he has made his home recently. Mr. Callow would have been 83 years old on Friday. His health has not been good for the past several years, during the past year he has been an invalid and he has failed rapidly for the last week or two. Mr. Callow was born in Blockley, Worcestershire, England, and lived there until 45 years ago, when he moved to this country, bringing with him his wife and their three children, for two or three months in Flint, and then making their home in this city, where the home has been since. Mrs. Callow died 19 years ago, and Mr. Callow married a second time, his second wife being Mrs. Robertson, who did not live many years. Since her death his home has been with his son, A. E. Callow. For twelve years after arriving here Mr. Callow was baggagemaster at the Grand Trunk and then he went into the hotel business, which he followed until his retirement, about 20 years ago. He owned the Union Hotel, on the site of the present Callow House, which burned down in 1900. Three children survive – Mrs. Dan Way of Seattle, W. J. Callow and A. E. Callow of this city. An adopted son, Charles Strong, lives in Detroit.
