Anna Maria Smith was born in Penn Yan, New York, December 25, 1831. When a small girl she came with her parents to Oakland county this state. Her mother died when she was six years of age and she lived with a family by the name of Holdridge until she was married to Henry M. Campbell in October, 1850. In May, 1875 they came to Smyrna where she has resided for over 57 years. To this union were born three girls Mrs. Adalaide Joslin, Mrs. Lucy Spencer, who departed from this life on January 10, 1914, and Mrs. Melvina Gardner. After the death of her husband, December 12, 1883, a granddaughter Marian Joslin, stayed with her a short time and a grandson, Virgil Gardner lived with her several years or until he was married. After the death of her husband, a daughter, Mrs. Spencer came and cared for her some of the time, but failing health called her elsewhere. Then a great grandson, Ernest Davis, stayed with grandmother until he too was married, then she lived in her old home alone during the summers and spent two winters with her daughter, Mrs. Melvina Gardner. May 10, 1921, on account of the serious illness of Mrs. Gardner, Grandma was removed to the home of her other daughter, Mrs. Adelaide Joslin. June 3 of this year she fell and fractured her hip and has been confined to her bed ever since, being tenderly cared for by her daughter, granddaughters and her many friends, but was taken worse last Monday night and gradually failed until she passed away, Saturday afternoon at 3:20. Had she lived until Christmas day she would have been 91 years of age. Besides her daughters and their husbands she leaves 17 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren to mourn the loss of a kind and loving mother and grandmother. She was of a jovial disposition ever ready to lend a helping hand in sorrow and distress and “Grandma” as she was familiarly called by all in this vicinity will be greatly missed. Her funeral was held at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Joslin, Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, Rev. H.S. Ellis officiating and the remains were laid to rest in Smyrna cemetery beside her husband.
