Aug. 9, 2012 James Leonard Campbell of Ionia died Aug. 7, 2012 with his family by his side in Lansing. He was born to Francis J. Campbell and Dorothy L. (Hendee) Campbell on Aug. 10, 1945 in Lansing. After graduating from Ionia High School in 1963 he served in Vietnam as an Army Medic. He was married to Deborah Dankert on Sept. 17, 1977. Jim held various positions over the years, including Corrections Officer, heavy equipment operator, truck driver, welder and iron worker. He retired as a Maintenance Mechanic from the State of Michigan. He was a talented builder and mechanic who could fix or build just about anything. Jim enjoyed the outdoors - hunting, horseback riding and his favorite sport, golf. He especially enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Jim is survived by his wife, Deborah; his son, Slade Campbell; his daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and James Charon; and two grandchildren, Stevie Gross and Beckham Charon. He is further survived by his sister-in-law, Patricia Pohlman; nieces, nephews, including nieces Laurie Wittenbach and Kris Ward of Ionia, nephews Carl and Larry Pohlman of Wisconsin; other relatives and many friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Claudia Stemler, and two nephews, Benjamin Pohlman and Michael Makley. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012, at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Ionia, with Rev. Thomas Boufford presiding. Rite of Committal will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Ionia. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Lehman Funeral Homes, 220 Rich St., Ionia. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Ionia High School Educational Fund, American Cancer Society, or to Ionia Area Hospice, in memory of James.
