Mr. Canfield was born in Plymouth February 4, 1844. He was mustered into Company D, Twenty-first Michigan infantry, August 11, 1862, and mustered out as a colors sergeant June 20, 1865. Returning from service he located in Ionia in the employ of Webber & Wilson, remaining in Ionia in various business connections until 1921, when the family home was transferred to Pittsburgh, Pa. He leaves by his first wife, Lucy Babcock, who died following the birth of her son, Lucius Babcock, of El Reno, Okla; by his second wife, who was Mary Benedict, now living in Pittsburgh, these children: Susan and Antoinette Canfield, of Pittsburgh, Pa.; Mrs. J. W. Hacker, of Beaver, Pa.; Mrs. Russell Richards and Joseph II Canfield, of Tucson, Ariz. Sergeant Perry, of Company H. directed the firing squad which acted as escort at the Grand Trunk station and at the cemetery. Private VanCamp was the bugler. Others in the squad were Sergeant Roche, Sergeant Conner, Peter Christensen, Harry Chase, Richard Bennett and Floyd Kenny. Rev. F. J. Fitch was the officiating clergyman. The bearers were E. W. Krambrink, Joel Benedict, Arden Benedict, Frank Taft, Ed. S. Townsend, and John Loomis. Those from out of town to attend the services were: Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Hacker, of Beaver Pa.; Mrs. Susan T. Canfield, of Pittsburgh, Pa.; Mr. and Mrs. William VerSluis, Grand Rapids; Mrs. Benedict Canfield and three children, Kalamazoo; Mrs. Carrie Benedict, and Mr. and Mrs. Joel Benedict, Clarksville.
