And the book continues that the years by reason of strength, may be four-score. But Mrs. Jane Cannon passed the three score and ten mark, passed even the four-score milestone yea, even the century and today lies dead at the home of her niece, Mrs. Thomas Bolen, 633 Lafayette avenue, S.E. at the age of 102. Mrs. Jane Cannon or Auntie Cannon as she was more familiarly known, had been ill for only two weeks and had been confined to her bed only about that time. Previous to the last illness Auntie Cannon in five years had not been ill more than four days, that is, that she needed to remain abed. She was born in Ireland and at fourteen years came to America with her parents. She resided in Canada for many years before coming to Michigan. For more than a quarter of a century she has made her home with Mrs. Bolen. Her husband died twenty-seven years ago. But Auntie had resided in Grand Rapids only about seven years. She came here with Mr. and Mrs. Bolen when they removed to Grand Rapids, from Ionia. The centenarian, even up to recent weeks, enjoyed good health. She dressed and undressed herself. She was able to until recently to ascend the stairs in the Bolen home without assistance. She gloried in her independence. Auntie Cannon did not like winter and she took joy in contemplating the approaching summer. In the balmy mid-summer days she delighted in sitting out on the porch, enjoying the fresh air and witnessing the life in the outdoors. In winter time she would not venture out and remained close by the fireside. Born in December, 1810, Auntie Cannon could tell stories in which she often could use the word “before”. She lived before so many inventions had been made, before the numerous improvements which have ceased to be marvels and now are part of everyday life, went into effect, that the tales were the most surprising kind to the generations which followed her. Auntie Cannon, strangely enough, did not mention any particular habit or mode of life to account for her longevity. She could not attribute her long life to any particular habit because she had no unusual ones. She was the last of her family. A brother, Michael Quinn, died a year ago. He was seventy-six years old. Besides Mrs. Bolen there are these nephews and nieces: Alphonsus Kennedy, Grand Rapids; Patrick Kennedy, Ionia; Michael and Thomas Kennedy, both of Alpena; Michael Quinn, Indianapolis; Ted, Thomas and John Quinn of Detroit and Mrs. E. D. Hunter of Battle Creek and Mrs. A. J. Patterson, wife of the local physician. The body will be sent to Ionia, where funeral services will be held at the church of SS. Peter & Paul Saturday morning. File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/mi/ionia/obits/c/cannon3480nob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/mifiles/ File size: 3.4 Kb
