Last Sunday morning the farm house of Mrs Mary Cannon in Berlin Township, north west of town, caught fire and her son Louis German climbed upon the roof to extinquish the flames. Mrs.Cannon was carrying water from a spring nearby, when she dropped to the ground, Louis hastened to her aide and found her unconscious. Neighbors having come to their assistance and extinquishing the fire before much damage had been done, she was carried to the house where everything was done for her, but was beyond all help as the excitement of the fire had brought on an attack of heart failure. The body wss carried to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Vandecar to await the funeral. Mary Chappel was born in Devonshire, England, May 14, 1837 and came to America in 1854 . In 1856 she was married to William German, who died while a soldier int he Civil War. to them were born three children, one of them also dying during the war, and two of them, Mrs Arthur Vandecar and Louis German survive her. About 1870 she was married to John Cannon, a veteran of the civil war, who died three years later. Mrs. Cannon has been a resident of Berlin since she came from England and was highly respected by all who knew her. She was a good mother and kind neighbor and will be greatly missed in that neighborhood. She was an Episcopalian and remained faithful to the service fo the Lord until her death. Besides her two children, Louis German and Mrs.Arthur Vandercar, she leaves two sisters, M.E. Chapel of this place and Mrs Henry Dean of Kalkaska; and two brothers, John Chappel, who just returned from Texas Saturday night, and Henry of Shelby. The funeral was held at the Congregational church last Thursday afternoon. Rev. Prestidge officiating and interment was in Lakeside Cemetery.
