He was born in San Luis, Potosi, Mexico on April 23, 1911, the son of Aucencio and Asuncion Garcia Cardenas. In Mexico he had worked for a time in a silver mine. Most his employment was in law enforcement. He married Maria Garza on March 19, 1928, in San Luis, Potosi, Mexico. They moved to McAllen, Texas, in 1941and made their home where he worked as a carpenter for a lumber company. The family moved to Ionia in 1963 where he continued the carpenter trade until a medical retirement. After retiring he spent a short while back in Mexico working a small silver mine on family property. He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Church and a member of the Cursillo movement in the church. He is survived by his wife, Maria; three sons, Zenon of Ionia, Jorge, Jr. of Portland and John of Ionia; six daughters, Mrs. Felix (Antonia) Carrizales of Ionia, Mrs. Robert (Ofelia) Vasquez of McAllen, Texas, Mrs. Narciso (Felipa) Romero of Lansing, Mrs. Ernest (Maria) Rivera of Portland, Mrs. Leo (Frances) Rowland of Ionia and Mrs. Terry (Isabel) Gray of Lansing; 47 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Herculano of McAllen, Texas, Agustin of Monterey, Mexico; one sister, Mrs. Margarita Allvarado of San Luis, Potosi, Mexico. Funeral mass will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. from SS. Peter and Paul Church, the Rev. Louis LeSarge officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Ionia. A bilingual scriptural wake service will be held at the Leddick Funeral Home Monday at 7:30 p.m. and a rosary in Spanish will be held at the Leddick Funeral Home on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for the SS. Peter and Paul School, in the care of the funeral home.
