He was born October 17, 1899, in Lake Odessa, the son of Claude and Laura Heick Carpenter. He was raised in Lake Odessa and was graduated from Lake Odessa High School in 1918. He attended the University of Michigan for one year. He married Edna Narregang August 20, 1921, in Holland. He joined his father in business selling Hudson and Essex automobiles and International farm implements. After a 1920 fire and his father’s retirement he managed the local Kroger grocery store and then owned and operated a grocery store for six years. During World War II he worked at the Nash Kelvinator plant in Lansing, then worked at General motors in Lansing for 20 years as an inspector, retiring in 1966. After retiring he and his wife moved to the Newaygo area where they lived for 12 years before moving back to Lake Odessa. In 1984 he was chosen to be the Grand Marshal for the Lake Odessa Fair. He was a member of the Lakewood United Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge, Knights of Pythius, Lions Club, Commercial Club, and the Historical Society. He is survived by his wife; four daughters; Betty Torrey of Jackson, Beth Tubbs of East Lansing, Beverly Brown of Woodland, and Lynda Warner of Lake Odessa; his son Jerry Carpenter of Bonita Springs, Florida; 24 grandchildren; 46 great grandchildren and two great great granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lois Forman on August 13, 1981, eight sisters and one brother. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Koops Funeral Chapel in Lake Odessa, with the Rev. James Hulett officiating. Burial will be in lakeside cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday. Memorials have been established for the Lakewood Community Ambulance Service and American Heart Association, in care of the funeral home.
