Carpenter, announcing the sudden and serious illness of his daughter, Gertrude, at Canisteo, N.Y., where she has been employed in a telephone office for some time. A second message soon followed with the news of her death after 12 hours’ illness, of convulsions caused by acute kidney disease. Miss Carpenter came to Woodland with her parents when three years old, moving to Lake Odessa in 1897; was a graduate from our high school class of ’06; had taught school near home for two years and not caring to teach this year, went to work at Canisteo, N.Y., where she died on Dec. 23, aged 21 years, 10 months. The remains were brought home by her father Thursday evening, where the funeral services were held on Sunday. The crowded house and beautiful flowers bore testimony to the esteem in which she was held. At 2 o’clock a quartet of young men sang, “Nearer My God to Thee.” The Rev. Prestidge, pastor of the Congregational church of which Miss Carpenter was a member, read the 23rd Psalm, Rev. A.T. Luther, of the M.E. church read a short scripture lesson. Rev. Prestidge offered prayer. The quartet sang “Good Night.” Rev. Luther gave an excellent discourse from First Corinthians. The remains were laid to rest in our beautiful Lakeside cemetery. A father and mother, also seven sisters and two brothers, beside a host of relatives a friends are left to mourn the early departure of the young daughter and sister. ------ Mrs. Charlotte Davis, of Howard City, was here Sunday in attendance at the funeral of her niece, Miss Gertrude Carpenter.
