Lewis was retired as Transportation Director of Portland Public Schools after 22 years of service. He was a member of the Ionia County Sheriff Posse for several years. Lewis farmed most of his life along with raising his beloved horses. He was active in 4-H and in the 1950's very active in Portland Rodeo's. He was a loving husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, great- grandfather and loved by many. He is survived by his wife, Susan J. Carpenter, Lewis's three children Melissa Lee (Carpenter) and Walter Davis, Bradley Lewis and Jacquie Carpenter, and Debra Sue (Carpenter) and Dale Fineran all of St. Petersburg, Florida. He is also survived by five stepchildren by his marriage to Betty Carpenter; Jeannette (Ingraham) and Jack Wilson, Twana (Ingraham) and Tom Dies, Kevin Ingram, Timothy and Beth Ingraham, William Jorgensen, Kristina K. (Hall) and Troy Hanson, and Jeffrey B. and Becky Hall. He had numerous grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty Carpenter in 1987, his mother Sevina (Rocke) Carpenter and his father Lewis Adelbert Carpenter Sr. Funeral Services will be conducted by Pastor Joe Robbe at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge St., Portland. Interment will be held at Portland Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Alzheimer's Association or the Ionia County Commission on Aging, Forget-Me-Not Program in memory of Lewis. The family would like to acknowledge Hospice of Ionia and the Forget-Me-Not Program of Ionia County Commission on Aging for all their help, services and guidance.
