When the war broke out Mr. Carpenter left his farm and responded to his country’s call for help. He was then 42 years of age. He enrolled September 22, 1861 from Lyons, Mich. as a private in Co. D, 9th Mich. V.I., 14th and 9th A.C. He was promoted to Corp., August 25, 1865. June 2, 1862 he was confined in hospital at Murfreesboro till July 13, 1862 on account of diarrhea.
