She has been ailing for several years and she suffered a slight stroke Thursday. Mrs. Carpenter was born in Orleans township, November 13, 1841, and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin H. Higbee, who were settles here from New York. April 12, 1866 a double wedding took place at the Higbee home, Miss Sarah Higbee and Benjamin Carpenter, Henry Hall and Cordelia Higbee being united. Mr. Carpenter was a civil war veteran and died February 4, 1911. In 1920 she moved from Orleans township to Ionia township where she lived with her daughter. She was one of the oldest living pioneers of Ionia county, having lived here all her life. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Laura L. Williams of Hamburg, two daughters, Mrs. Laura Squires, of Muskegon, and Mrs. Maggie Cole, of South Ionia; two sons, Lewis Carpenter, of Newaygo, and Ralph Carpenter, of Ionia township; six grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon, May 6, at 2 o’clock from the Stone funeral home. Rev. F. J. Fitch will officiate and interment will be at the Higbee cemetery.
