Thus another of the early settlers of the township passes away. Mother Carpenter was born at Wolcott, New York, Dec. 19th, 1815, and was married to Mr. Cyril Carpenter in 1835, at Phelps, New York. Soon after with her husband she came to the state of Ohio, where they lived until 1852, when they moved to Michigan and settled on section 35, of Sebewa, when this township was scarcely more than a wilderness, and where she resided until the day of her death on the above date. Mother Carpenter was converted to the Christian faith at the age of 22 years, and united with the Wesleyan Methodist of which she was one of the leading members until her removal to this state, in 1852. In 1858, with her husband, she was prominent in organizing a Baptist society in this place in which Mr. Carpenter was chosen deacon, in which capacity he served until his death, several years ago. Mother Carpenter was notable for her excellent moral character and Christian integrity and many will remember his for her tender sympathies toward the poor in the early settlement of the township. She leaves a son, two daughters, and many friends who mourn her departure. The funeral occurred on the 16th, the discourse being delivered by the Rev. J. C. Lemmon, from first Corinthians xv, 19-20 from which he pictured the physical life and death and the life of immortality in glowing terms.
