Carpenter, a citizen of Ionia for 29 years, died at the Blodgett hospital in Grand Rapids Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock from diabetes at the age of 59 years. He had not been well since the fall when he contracted pneumonia which left him weak. About two weeks ago a complication of troubles induced the family to have him taken to the hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter came to Ionia from Ovid 29 years ago and for nearly all of that time Mr. Carpenter has been in the wood working department of the Pere Marquette car shops except for one year when he was city marshal. Mr. Carpenter was a Mason and an Oddfellow. He leaves besides his wife, five children, Mrs. Althea Pilkinton of Ionia, Vern Carpenter of Spokane, Mrs. Jessie Van Dyke of Davenport, Ia., Dr. George Carpenter of Kewanee, Ill., and Frederick G. Carpenter of Los Angeles. Mr. Carpenter’s mother, aged 88, also survives, living at Ovid. The remains arrived in Ionia Saturday evening and the funeral will be held at the home, 325 Division street, at 3 o’clock Tuesday afternoon and then the remains will be taken to Ovid Wednesday morning where a short service will be held and where the interment will take place.
