Carroll, age 78, of Grand Rapids, and formerly of Ionia, passed away Sunday June 8, 2003. He was born September 16, 1924 in Ionia, the son of Harry R. Carroll and Pearl (Rhodes) Johnston. He graduated from Ionia High School in 1942. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1943, serving in WW II. He married the former Jean F. Bloomer on December 6, 1952 in Ionia, and she survives him. He was employed by the State of Michigan, Secretary of State for 35 years, retiring in 1981. They moved to Grand Rapids in 1973. Mr. Carroll was a lifetime member of the VFW Creston Post #3023, American Legion Furniture City Post #258 in Grand Rapids, State Employees Retirees Association (a former officer), and a member of Ionia First Christian Church. Harry was also an active baseball player in Ionia during his high school years. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson Daniel Killion; sister Lucille Reeves; brother Jack Johnston; stepfather George Johnston. Surviving are his wife, Jean; son Daniel (Janet) Carroll of Ionia; granddaughter Julie Killion; two great-granddaughters, Ashlee and Hali Killion; brother Jim (Clara) Johnston of Key Largo, Florida; two sisters Louise (Cleo Jr.) Scutt of Portland and Lois (George) Miller of Lyons. Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Carol Meeder and the Rev. Rick Branaman at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Christian Church in Ionia with interment following at Tuttle Cemetery, Ionia. The family will receive friends and the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Cook Chapel, 220 Rich Street, Ionia, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
