Carten, Richard Carten and Frank Carten of this city died at shortly after midnight, Friday night, after only a brief illness following three or four years of feeble health. She would have been 77 years old in the course of another month. Her husband, John Carten, died here three years ago. Mrs. Carten’s maiden name was Catherine Stone. She was born in Ontario, Canada, her parents being Mr. and Mrs. Charles Stone. Mr. Stone was later an Easton township pioneer, and occupied at one time what is now the Wilbur Locke farm south of Belding. Charles and Richard Stone, who were the members of a dry goods firm here a quarter century ago, were her brothers. Charles Stone is still living in Hastings, Nebraska. The marriage to Mr. Carten took place in Ontario. In 1873 they moved to Cannonsburg, Mich., where they lived a few years, and then changed their residence to Belding, where they made their home for about 23 years. Ten years ago they moved to Ionia, where their home has been ever since. Since Mr. Carten’s death, Mrs. Carten has made her home with her children. There are nine children now living, two having died. Mrs. Caine, Mrs. Jos. Wacha of Orleans, Mrs. Charles Krupp of Miriam, Miss Ella Carten of Detroit, T.A. Carten, Richard Carten, Frank Carten of Ionia, Charles Carten of Grand Rapids and John Carten of Chicago are the children living. There are 25 grandchildren. Mrs. Krupp and Mrs. Wacha were with their mother at the time of her death. The funeral services were attended on Sunday afternoon, at 2:30 o’clock at the home of her son, Thos. A. Carten, on West Main street, and at 3:00 o’clock at the Baptist church, where she worshipped so long and so devoutly. The services at both places were conducted by Rev. E.E. Branch, and there was singing at the church by Mrs. Grace Cressy, Mrs. G.M. Phelps, and Messrs. Percy Angove and Herbert Cooper. The attendance at the church was very large, and the set pieces of flowers which covered the casket and were set about the platform were of exceeding beauty in this midseason of floral elegance and profusion. The carriers were the four sons and two sons-in-law, Thos. A., Frank A., Richard M., and Charles Carten, and James Wacha and Charles Krupp. Burial was alongside the husband in Mount Olivet, by special dispensation of Bishop Foley procured by Thos. A. Carten, to carry out the expressed wish of his mother, that she might be laid at rest beside her husband gone before. – Ionia Standard.
