He died Monday after being a resident there in recent years, moving there for the benefit of his health. His death occurred Monday. He was formerly associated with his brother, Thomas A. Carten, in an Ionia dry goods store. After the business was dissolved he was employed by the Ypsilanti Reed Furniture Factory for some time. Mr. Carten was confined in a Tucson hospital as a result of an automobile accident about a year ago. He had been in Arizona about two years. He is survived by his daughter, Esther, who was living with him in Arizona and one sister, Mrs. Katherine Wacha of Orleans. Mr. Carten came to Ionia when he was 17 years of age. He was born in 1874 at Canonsburg. He was a graduate of Belding High school. For many years he worked at Carten’s Department store in Ionia for his uncle, T. A. Carten, and later opened his own store where he sold wall paper and paints. He was married to Esther Gavin of Grand Rapids who died 40 years ago. Later he was married to Esther Brooks who died a number of years ago. The body will arrive in Ionia Friday morning at 9:30 and be at the Myers funeral home. Rosary will be said at the funeral home at 7:30 Friday evening. Prayer service will be at 8:30 Saturday morning followed by Requiem High Mass at 9 o’clock at SS. Peter and Paul church. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
