A. Carten. He had contracted pneumonia and though skilled care had cured the disease it left him too weak to recover. His advanced age, 85 years, was the cause of his death. Mr. Carten was born in Dublin, Ireland, June 24, 1828. When he was seven years old his mother, a widow, brought him and three younger children to American, landing at Quebec, where she made their home. His home was in Canada until 1873. In December, 1858, he was married to Miss Catherine Stone, sister of Richard and Chas. Son, who were in the dry goods business here for many years. Mr. and Mrs. Carten had eleven children, nine of whom survive him, with his wife. They are Thos. A. Carten, of this city, Richard M. of Belvidere, Ill, Mrs. Chas. Krupp of Otisco, Charles of Grand Rapids, Mrs. Anna Caine of this city, john P of Detroit, Mrs. Joseph Wacha of Orleans, Francis A. of Ionia and Miss Ella of Detroit. In 1871, Mr. and Mrs. Carten moved to Cannonsburg, Kent Co., Mich., and he engaged in blacksmithing and wagon and carriage repairing. In 1882 they moved to Belding, where they remained until 1907, when they came to Ionia and made their home with their son. Mr. Carten was a familiar figure on Ionia streets and particularly at the Catholic Church, where he was a regular and devoted attendant. Up to the time of his death he preserved an interest in all around him, and was unusually active in both mind and body for one of his years. His cheerful manner and kind heart made him keenly missed during his illness and there are many who feel his demise. Solemn High Mass will be celebrated tomorrow at nine o’clock. Burial will take place at Mount Olivet.
