Sentinel-Standard - Monday, July 22, 1935

Mrs. Etta Carten, 83, widow of Thomas A. Carten, who for nearly a half 
century had a prominent part in the mercantile history of Ionia, died 
Saturday night at 11:30 at her home, 306 East Main street. Mrs. Carten had 
been in ill health for nearly five years but had been seriously ill since 
July 5.

She was born in Holley, New York, April 3, 1852, the daughter of Patrick and 
Ellen McDonald and came to Lyons with her parents when she was a small 
child. She attended school at Lyons and upon finishing passed a teachers' 
examination and taught school for several years in the vicinity of 
Hubbardston. She was married to Thomas A. Carten in 1892 and has resided in 
Ionia nearly ever since. Mr. Carten was an Ionia merchant for years and and 
she assisted him in the store. He died eight years ago and for a time she 
was in Detroit and Ann Arbor with her niece but had kept her residence in 
Ionia. She was a member of the SS. Peter and Paul church and for years was a 
member of the Rosary society of that church, however ill health the past few 
years had kept her from active work in the organization. 

Surviving are a niece, Miss Esther Carten, who had always lived with her: 
and several cousins including, Edwin A. Murphy and Mrs. Wilmont Loveless, 
Lyons: Mrs. Chester Jackson, Detroit: formerly of Ionia, and Mrs. Sarah 
Burtch, Ionia. 

Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock from SS. Peter 
and Paul church with Rev. Fr. J. V. Coyle officiating. Interment will be at 
the family lot at Mt. Olivet cemetery.
