Carter, 79, of Greenville died suddenly Friday, March 25, 2005, at Spectrum Health Butterworth Campus. She was born in Ionia on April 14, 1925, the daughter of Ernest and Edith Patrick Wakefield. Mary married her high school sweetheart in Greenville at home on Dec. 25, 1923, by the Rev. Dr. St. Clair Parsons and together they enjoyed a wonderful partnership together. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Greenville and worked with her husband as owners of Greenville Construction Co. They loved camping and fishing and traveling together. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Norm and Fred Wakefield; her sisters, Hilda Hodgkins and Fran Heimbecker; and infant son Jerry. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Harold “Scoot” Carter Jr.; their sons, Tom and Nan Carter of Trufant, Bruce and Sherry Carter of Adrian; grandchildren, Joy and Ken Hayward, Gary and Lori Carter, Jeff and Rebecca Carter, Amanda and Darcy Schrieber, Emily and Nate Harkness, Sarah and Matt Higgins, Greg Carter and Mikayla Carter; great-grandchildren, Joshua, Bethany, Nathan, Mitchell, Madison, Brayden, Natalie and Wyatt; daughter-in-law, Belinda Carter of Saline; brother-in-law, Albert and Janette Heimbecker of Greenville, sisters-in-law, Virginia and Maurice Coady of Portage, Eleanor and Charles Haste; and nieces and nephews. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Faith Baptist Church, Greenville, with Pastors Robert Winter and Randy Williams officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Memory Gardens, Belding. Visitation is 1 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Hurst Funeral Home, Greenville. Memorial contributions may be given to Faith Baptist Church or Living Message-Lifehelp.
