CARTER, 100, of 2700 Burcham Dr., East Lansing, formerly of Lake Odessa, died Thursday afternoon at his residence. He was born Sept. 9, 1880 in Odessa Township. In his youth he spent a year stringing the first telephone lines in the Los Angeles area and later attended Michigan State University. He married Blanche Luther in Lake Odessa June 29, 1910. He then farmed near Lake Odessa until 1927 when he went to work for the State Department of Agriculture in Lansing. He later transferred to the state tax division where he worked until his retirement in 1949. The family lived in East Lansing during those years. In 1950, he returned to the homestead farm near Lake Odessa where he remained until 1976. Then he and Mrs. Carter returned to East Lansing to live in Burcham Hills Retirement Center. Mr. Carter was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Ionia and a charter member of the Lakeside Grange of Lake Odessa. He was also a member of the Capital Grange in East Lansing and active in Farm Bureau Work many years. Mr. and Mrs. Carter celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in June of 1980. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Blanche Carter; four daughters, Mrs. Louise Sacha of East Lansing, Mrs. Richard Florence Drullinger of Haslett, Mrs. William Alice Crissman of Burnsville, Minn., and Mrs. Laurence Agnes Lipsett of Webster, N. Y.; one son, Lt. Col. Olin B. Carter of Reno, Nev.; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the Pickens-Koops Funeral Chapel in Lake Odessa with the Rev. Roy A. Pitts officiating. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Lake Odessa. The family will receive friends and relatives Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the funeral chapel in Lake Odessa."
