I. and Susan Cary, was born at Omer, Seneca County, Ohio, June 17, 1839, and died at his home in Boston Township Tuesday, October 18, 1927, aged 88 years. He was married to Phoebe A. Tapham, Dec. 19, 1866. Two children were born to them, Flora Pearl, who died in infancy and Samuel Y. Cary, of Boston township. Mr. Cary was a soldier in the Ionia army. He enlisted in the fall of 1861 in the Third Ohio Volunteer Calvary and served four years until the war closed. His regiment fought in the battles of Corinth, Murfreesboro, Lookout Mt., and Missionary Ridge. He was with Sherman during a part of his famous march and campaign in Georgia. After the war he returned to civilian life, married, and soon after moved to Odessa township in Ionia county, where he resided for eight years. He came to Boston township forty-nine years ago and settled on the farm where he has since resided. He has been since early life a member of the Methodist church. His life has been long, useful, patriotic, and honorable. He is survived by his only son, Samuel Y. Cary, three sisters, Mrs. Hannah McPherson, Kansas City, Mo., Mrs. Jennie James, Ann Arbor; Mrs. Jessie Hatton, Woodland; two grandsons and a number of nephews and nieces, Mrs. Cary having preceded him in death Sept. 3, 1923. The funeral service was largely attended and was held at the home Friday afternoon, Oct. 21, Rev. A. T. Cartland, officiating. He was buried in the South Boston cemetery with military honors in charge of representatives of the American Legion, of Lowell. We also desire to thank especially for the beautiful flowers, the singers who sang at the funeral, the members of the American Legion who assisted at the burial and the pastor for the words of sympathy and hope.
