Was Treasurer of Missionary Society for 22 Years and Served Congregationalists Six Years as Clerk. A noble life was ended, Monday afternoon, in the death of Mrs. Emily Case at the residence on Smith street. A severe attack of lagrippe, developing just a week previous, as the cause, although the woman had been in ill health most of the winter. Mrs. Case’s only daughter, Frances, who has been a faithful companion since childhood, was with her when the summons came. Deceased was a daughter of the late Dr. Wm. Root, for many years engaged in the medical profession here and for 25 years or more the town’s postmaster. She was born in Chatham, Columbia county, New York, July 18, 1832, and upon coming to Michigan with her parents in 1835 became a resident of Manchester, Washtenaw county. In 1854 she was married to Homer G. Case. Immediately after their marriage the couple settled at Allegan, where Mr. Case carried on a general mercantile business for some time. Of three children born to this union but one daughter, Frances, survives. One son died in his infancy and another, William Edwin, passed away at the age of 21 while the family were making their home in Detroit. After the death of his second son Mr. Case went to Conway, Ark., where he died at the age of 51. The remains were brought to Allegan and interred beside the bodies of the two sons. Since Mr. Case’s death Mrs. Case and daughter, Frances, have made their home in Portland. Mrs. Case affiliated with the Congregational church many years ago and was a faithful member of that society until her death. For 22 years she was treasurer of the Ladies’ Missionary society and for six years was clerk of the church. Of a kind and lovable disposition she made friends easily and always retained them. She was a true Christian woman and universally admired. Through her death her daughter, Frances, a steadfast companion, is left alone, but is bearing up well under the condolences of friends. Mrs. James F. Reed, of Grand Rapids, is the only surviving member of Mrs. Case’s family, a sister, Mrs. Harriet Whitacre, of Elk Rapids, having been buried from the Case residence here March 24th, 1914. Rev. Wm. H. Skentelbury, of the Congregational church, officiated at Mrs. Case’s funeral service, which was conducted at the late residence Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 in the presence of many sorrowing friends and relatives. Those from a distance to attend were Mrs. James F. Reed, the only surviving sister of deceased, and Mrs. Bert Reed and two daughters, Frances and Dorothy, of Grand Rapids; Mrs. Judge Cross, Allegan; W. R. Whitacre, Big Rapids; Arthur Whitacre, Elk Rapids. Interment was in Portland cemetery.
