He was born in Wacousta in 1922 to Charles and Maude Gunkel Case. Orvel was the Golden Gloves welterweight champion of Ionia county, where he graduated from high school at Carson City in 1941. He was a veteran of World War II. Employed by Post Cereals for 31 years, he retired in 1979. Orvel was a member of Kalamo Masonic Lodge 327, where he was a past master, Bedford Royal Arch 188, Bedford Council and a member of Pennfield Presbyterian Church. He also volunteered at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Battle Creek. An avid gardener, Orvel sold raspberries, strawberries and eggs from his small farm, where he also ran a Christmas tree business for 15 years. He loved to bowl, hunt and fish. He loved his grandchildren and all his family pets. He volunteered often at the Our Lady of Great Oak food pantry and always championed the little man and the less fortunate. Orvel was preceded in death by his parents, Maude and Charles; his brothers, Caleb and Charles; and his sisters Rachel and Delilah. Orvel is survived by his wife, Winifred Fitz Case; sons, Daniel Lee Case, Conant G. Case, both of Battle Creek; stepdaughter, Barbara Sagara of Portage; former wife, Vera Bradstreet Case of Battle Creek and Florida; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The family will have a private burial at Orleans Cemetery. A memorial Mass will be scheduled at a later date at St. Thomas More Catholic Parish in Kalamazoo. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the National Heart Association or the National Alzheimer’s Foundation. Care and service were entrusted to Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home.
