She was born on October 11, 1911 in Hancock, the daughter of Otto and Mary (Peters) Krellwitz. She was a 1929 graduate of Ionia SS Peter and Paul High School and married Denard O. Caswell on October, 1, 1935 at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church. She as an avid golfer, tennis player, gardener, and bridge player. Mattie was an active member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, St. Cecelia’s Rosary Circle and Ladies Literary Club. She was also a former member of the Gray Ladies at Ionia County Memorial Hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Denard Caswell in 2000; grandson Lee Caswell; sisters, Aloysia James, Helen Cox, and Catherine Schafer; brothers, Theodore Krellwitz and Frank Krellwitz. Surviving are her sons, James (Joy) Caswell of Rancho Palos Verdes, California, and Jon (Elaine) Caswell of Ionia, grandchildren, Ross (Daphne) Levy of San Francisco, California, Evan Levy of San Pedro, California, Lisa Caswell of Ann Arbor, Christopher (Rona) Caswell of Grand Rapids, and Stephen Caswell of Davis, California; great-grandchildren, Arlen Levy and Emet Levy of San Francisco, California, Justine Levy of San Pedro, California and Luke Caswell of Grand Rapids; sisters, Genevieve Brownley of Edmond, Oklahoma and Mary Jepson of Ionia; many nieces and nephews. A memorial mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ionia. The family will receive friends at the Schrauben- Lehman Funeral Home, Cook Chapel, 220 Rich Street, Ionia from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. A rosary will be prayed at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Memorial contributions may be made to the SS Peter and Paul School Scholarship Fund or to the Ionia Area Hospice, in memory of Mathilda “Mattie” Caswell.
