Divine Caukin was taken sick with heart trouble last evening at his home 
shortly after eight o’clock and died inside of half an hour.

He was sitting in the hammock on the lawn at the time for a rest and soon 
complained of feeling very bad.  He went into the house and laid down on some 
sofa pillows in the doorway, but grew so much worse that he told Mrs. Caukin 
to call a physician as he believed he was going to die.  Mrs. Caukin hurried 
to the phone and summoned Dr. Dutt, who arrived just as he was breathing his 
last.  Mrs. I. L. Hubbell and O. J. Burris , near neighbors, were there 
shortly after he was taken and rendered assistance until his death.  He was 
conscious during the short time he was sick but was in terrible pain about the 
region of his heart.

Mr. Caukin had done a hard day’s work and after supper went down town and on 
returning was taking a quiet rest when stricken.  He was 61 years old and has 
been a resident of this city over twenty years.  As soon as their son, Ed 
Caukin of Laporte, Ind., arrives arrangements will be made for the funeral.

The funeral of the late Divine Calkins was held at the house Saturday and the 
burial took place in the old cemetery.

He was born in Fayette, Ohio, Nov. 3, 1857, and died June 24, 1908 at the age 
of 56 years, 7 months, 21 days.  He was married to Mary Case in Girard, Kas., 
Nov. 10, 1874 and two children were born to them, a son and daughter.  The 
latter died in infancy.  The son, F. E. Calkins, is a resident of Laporte, Ind.

On June 20, 1886 he married Sarah Ada Green.
