Philip Cavanaugh, the old gentleman who has held the position of flagman at the Ballou crossing of the Pere Marquette railroad for several months, died in this city on Friday, July 15th, 1904, after having reached the ripe old age of three score years and ten. The remains, accompanied by his sorrowing widow and Dan McMahon, section foreman of the Pere Marquette were taken to Grand Haven Saturday for interment, a son of the deceased arriving here on the same train in time to accompany his mother on the sad mission. W.H. Peck of the Belding-Hall Co. and W.B. Travis of the Ballou Basket Works raised a purse of $22.50 for Mrs. Cavanaugh which was presented to her just prior to her departure to assist her in bearing the expenses of the funeral, and the fervant “God Bless You’s” which the poor old lady poured forth upon Mr. Peck was indeed a most satisfactory reward for the kindness shown to her in the dark hours of her sorrow.
