Forrest Chadwick, aged 68 years, well known and long time resident of Orleans 
township, met instant death at about 4 o’clock Monday afternoon when he was 
struck by a bolt of lightning, during a severe storm which visited this section 
of the country and as he was attempting to close one of the windows in his 
home, on M-44, several miles east of the city. 

The bolt struck the Chadwick home but did very little damage to the building.  
It traversed along the eaves and to the window which Mr. Chadwick was in the 
act of closing in order to keep the rain from beating in and brought instant 
death to the farm.  Mrs. Chadwick was stunned by the bolt and did not recover 
for some time from the effects of the lightning.

Mr. Chadwick was born in Orleans township and had resided in the community 
practically all of his life.  He was for a number of years engaged as a 
motorman on the street railway system in Grand Rapids.

Coroner Bruce Fales of this city was called to the Chadwick home shortly after 
the man’s death and decided that an inquest was unnecessary.  The body was 
brought to the Fales funeral home here and prepared for burial and funeral 
services will be held at the home near Orleans on Thursday afternoon at 3 
o’clock with Rev H. S. Ellis officiating and burial will be in Greene cemetery, 
east of the city.

Surviving are the widow and three children by a former marriage: Mrs. Ben 
Banhagel of Ionia, Mrs. James Blanchard of Royal Oak and Albert Chadwick of 
Pontiac.
