Clettis was born on Oct. 16,1930 in Garrett, Ky., the son of Allen and Elifair Hicks Chaffins. Clettis was a veteran of the Korean War proudly serving in the United States Army. He retired in 1992 after 30 years of service at Detroit Gasket in Belding. He had a great love of family and bluegrass music. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, canning, and trap and skeet shooting. He was a member of the Belding Sportsman's Club and the American Legion Post #203 of Belding. He was married on July 4, 1953 in Lima, Ohio to Joanne Campbell, and she survives along with their children Mary Alice (Wayne) Frantz of Nashville, Mich., Jerry Chaffins of Belding, Elaine Renee Lenard of Kentwood, Clettis Allen (Linda) Chaffins of Saranac and Connie (Todd) Waterman of Ionia. Clettis is also survived by 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; his brother Marcus Chaffins of Lima, Ohio; his sister, Vonda Jean (Woodrow) Shepherd of Avilla, Ind. and two sister-in-laws Linda Sue Chaffins of Lima, Ohio and Novi Chaffins also of Lima. Clettis was preceded by his parents; three brothers, Dewey Chaffins, Harvey Chaffins and Ivan Chaffins; two sister-in-laws, Ruby Chaffins and Madeline Chaffins; three sisters and brother-in-laws, Florence and Hayden Crager, Ethel and Lester Collins, and Genevieve and Doug Prater. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Shiloh Community Church with Pastor Ken Harger officiating. Interment will be in Orleans Township Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Johnson Feuerstein Funeral Home in Belding. Memorials may be given to the American Lung Association.
