Challender, 87, of Portland entered into eternal peace on May 24, 2014 in Grand Rapids Michigan as a result of a traumatic head injury from a fall. She was born in rural Gratiot County to Orville and Sadie Belle Kiefer on November 5, 1926. Arlene graduated from Ionia High School in 1945. She married Howard B. Challender on June 8, 1946. She was a retiree of General Motors. Arlene was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Ladies of the Nile, Portland VFW Auxiliary, and Roxanne Service Group. She attended Portland First Congregational Church while at home in Portland and enjoyed going to Gulf Shores for the winter. Her interests were making quilts for family and friends, reading Amish novels, as well as listening to live Country music. Arlene was preceded by her parents, husband, sister (Geraldine Pottruff), and grandson Troy Ward. She leaves behind her two daughters, Marilyn (Rich) Webert and Diane (Mike) Ward, who were with her as she passed through the final stages of her life. To cherish her memory are her grandchildren, Rick (Kelly) Webert, Jennifer (Rob Marriott) Webert, Nicholas (Shannon) Webert, Cory (Shari) Webert, Todd (Denise) Ward, and Timothy (Mandy) Ward. Great grandchildren, Chase, Quentin, Samuel, Sophia, Caden, Cody, Chandler, Nichole, Hannah, Haley, Kaden and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, two sister in laws, one brother in law and other loving relatives and friends. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Doctors, Nurses, and Hospice at Spectrum Hospital. The Funeral Service was held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at the First Congregational Church, Portland, with Rev. Dr. Marilyn V. Danielson presiding. Interment followed at Portland Cemetery. The family received friends from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday at the church. Donations are being accepted for the church steeple renovation. Arrangements are entrusted to Lehman Funeral Homes, Portland.
