Chambers, died from crushing chest injuries when pinned between the frame and dump box of a truck he was working on Monday afternoon. Ionia county medical officer Dr. Leandre Bautista and deputy medical examiners William Bensinger, Ionia county under- sheriff and Sheriff O. Gary Newton indicated Chambers died after a dump-box guide penetrated his lower chest area. Sheriff Newton said his department was notified of the accident about 4 pm after Mrs. Chambers heard her husband scream as the hydraulic lift failed, allowing the box to fall. Undersheriff Bensinger said a passerby, Jerry Hall of Long Lake Road, when he found he was unable to move the dump box with the truck’s power, started a nearby farm tractor with a hydraulic front end and raised the dumpbox allowing authorities to free the man, reportedly already dead from the crushing injury. Further examination by the medical examiner at Ionia County Memorial Hospital confirmed the cause of death. Chambers, who lived t 289 East Long Lake road in a house trailer, was apparently a self-employed contractor in hauling gravel and providing masonry work in the area. According to Sheriff Newton, he formerly lived on Bricker Road in Montcalm County, where he operated a small farm. He made his home on Long Lake Road approximately one year. After examination at the county hospital the body was removed to Stone-Kauffman funeral home where funeral arrangements were being completed. Chambers death is the first non-highway related death involving a motor vehicle in Ionia County.
