Champlin, 96, of Belding, died Thursday evening, July 23, 2002, at Heartland Health Center, Ionia. She was born Nov. 26, 1905, in Ithaca, the daughter of Robert and Sadie Smith Sweet. Mildred graduated from County Normal and taught school for a few years. She was a former member of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union and of TOPS. Mildred married Jay Champlin on July 29, 1929, at Grand Ledge. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jay Champlin, on Nov. 13, 2000; parents, Robert and Sadie Sweet; one brother, Tim; a son, Eugene; and a daughter-in-law, Eleanor. She is survived by her children, Dorothea and Wendall Wyngarden of Holland, Jeannette Bothelho, Forrest and Narva Champlin, Keith and Alice Champlin, all of Belding, Charles and Jackie Champlin of Trufant, John Champlin of Kent City; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Dana Sweet of Florida. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding, with Pastor Junior Avery officiating. Interment will be in River Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to the Alvah N. Belding Library or a charity of one’s choice.
