The Ionia County News, Thursday, November 24, 1932

The “last leaf upon the tree” of Portland’s G.A.R. post fluttered to the 
ground with the death this week of Philo N. Chapel.  He was 84 years old and 
the last member of the Civil War veterans’ organization.

Mr. Chapel was born near Portland in 1848 and at the age of 14 enlisted in 
Company I of the Custer Division of the Illinois Cavalry.  He was married in 
1876 to Alice Francis of Portland.  She died early this year.

Funeral services are to be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Portland Methodist 
church with Rev. Ray Birdsall officiating.  Interment will be in the Portland 
cemetery.
