Pioneer Passes At L. Odessa Sidney Chapin, Aged 90 Years, Died After Short Illness. Funeral at Home, Monday. Sidney Chapin, more than ninety years of age, passed away Saturday at his home on Third avenue after a brief illness of two weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Chapin have lived in Lake Odessa eighteen years, coming here from Orange township, Ionia county, where they spent the most of their early married life with the exception of a few years in Howard City. The Chapins were truly pioneers settling where the county was a wilderness about 70 years ago. They began their home with home made furniture from the trees and dry-goods boxes in the log house. This was in 1862, a long ways from their comfortable home in Lake Odessa. The funeral was held at the home Monday afternoon with the Rev. E. H. Humphrey officiating and with burial at Lakeside cemetery. Obituary. Sidney Chapin was born in Crawford county, Pennsylvania, November 3, 1847, and passed away at Lake Odessa, Mich., Saturday, Feb. 26, 1938, at the age of 90 years, three months and 23 days. On August 13, 1872, he was united in marriage to Emma Jane Rogers of Orange township. To this union were born two children, Mabel of Lake Odessa and a son Melvin, now of Detroit. Mr. and Mrs. Chapin celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and again their 60th anniversary five years ago. Mr. Chapin was a life member of the I.O.O.F. having been a member 65 years, was also a member of the Rebekahs many years. He leaves to mourn their loss, his widow, son and daughter, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren besides many relatives and friends. Card of Thanks: We wish to thank our friends and neighbors and those who assisted us in any way during the illness, death and burial of our husband and father. Especially do we wish to thank Rev. E. H. Humphrey for his comforting words, the I.O.O.F., Rebekahs and Lakeside Grange for the beautiful flowers. -Mrs. Jane Chapin, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Chapin, Mrs. Mabel Bouck.
