Chapin, 75, of Ionia, passed away Friday, May 9, 2003, at Ionia County Memorial Hospital. He was born the son of James and Ethel (Dillenbeck) Chapin on December 1, 1927, in Ionia. Mr. Chapin graduated from Stanton High School in 1946 and from Montcalm County Normal after one year. He taught two years in Stanton Rural Schools. Robert was also a Veteran of the Korean war, serving in the U.S. Marines. He was a long time member and Lay Minister for many years at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ionia, and a Corrections Lay Chaplain for a number of years. Bob was a past Grand Knight of the Ionia Knights of Columbus where he was a 3rd Degree with the Fr. Fierle Council #994, and a 4th Degree with the Bishop Edward D. Kelley Assembly #0473 in Grand Rapids. He was also a long time State Officer of the Squires. He retired from Brown Corporation in Ionia. He worked part- time at Cook Funeral Home in Ionia as well. He was preceded in death by his father James Chapin in 1955; brothers, Charles and Gary Chapin; sister, May O’Mara and niece Joy Slingerland. Surviving are his mother, Ethel Chapin of Greenville; brother, Richard (Patricia) Chapin of Sheridan; sisters, Phyllis (Laverne) Adams of Greenville and Lois (Bill) Walker of Grand Rapids; several nieces and nephews that he adored greatly; very special brother-in-law, Gene O’Mara of Lake Odessa; and sister-in-law, Janet Chapin of Lakeview. The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Monday, May 12, 2003, at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ionia, with Fr. Melvin Fox, Pastor, as celebrant. Rite of Committal to take place at Forest Hill Cemetery, Stanton. The family will receive friends at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Cook Chapel, 220 Rich Street, Ionia, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday with a rosary prayed at 8 p.m. Sunday.
