James M. Chapman, 83, resident of Palo area, died Tuesday evening at Clark 
Memorial home in Grand Rapids where he had been a resident seven weeks.

He was born near Calumet and had worked his entire life in the education 
field.  He was superintendent of Laurium school system, Upper Peninsula, 
before going to Colorado Springs, Colo., where he taught until he retired.  He 
returned from retirement and taught in schools at Lyons, Hubbardston and Maple 
Rapids.

Mr. Chapman was married to Sarah M Judevine who died in 1958.

He is survived by two sons, Ronald of Linden, NJ, and Robert of Mountain View, 
Calif; 2 granddaughters; one sister, Anna Chapman of Colorado Springs, Colo., 
and several nieces and nephews.  

The body will be at the Stone-Kauffman funeral home until Friday noon when it 
will be taken to Palo Methodist church for services at 2 p.m.   Burial will be 
a Woodard Lake Cemetery

Funeral service for James M. Chapman, 83, of Palo was conducted Friday 
afternoon at Pal Methodist church by the Rev. Lewis Herrick and Rev. M.R. 
Putnam.  Organist ws Mrs. Carl Wingeier.  Mr. Chapmen died Tuesday evening. 

Bearers were Pearl Hall, Ralph Safford, George Dickerson, Ford Mason, Claude 
Newman and Carl Wingeier.  Burial was at Woodard Lake cemetery.

Attending from out of town were Robert Chapman of Moutain View, Calif., Mr. 
and Mrs. Ronald J. Chapman of Linden NJ and Mr and Mrs. Joseph Hoover and Mrs. 
Lyle Sprague of Falmouth and Mrs. and Mrs. L. George Beacock, Rev. A.T. 
Cortland, Zippha E. Steele and Mabel Barden of Grand Rapids.
