She was born May 2, 1870 at Chaff Mine in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Chapman. Following completion of a nurses's training course she worked as a practical nurse in Keweenaw county for a number of years. She was also Houghton township treasurer for several terms previous to her retirement in 1955, and was a member of the Phoenix Methodist-Episcopal church. In 1955 she was honored at a celebration by the Ahmeek Community club as Keweenaw county's oldest living resident. For many years she made her home in Phoenix with a sister Alice Mary Chapman, who died in 1957. In July of 1957 she came to Ionia to live on Star route with her brother, James Chapman. Surviving are a sister, Miss Anna E. Chapman of Colorado Springs Colo.; and a brother, James Chapman, Star route, Ionia. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Palo Methodist church. The Rev. Harold Cox will officiate and burial will be in Woodard Lake cemetery. The body will be at Stone-Kauffman funeral home until Saturday noon. Additional Comments: Supplemental to above, Monday, Aug. 7, 1958 Funeral service for Miss Sarah May Chpaman, 87, who died Thursday, was conducted at the Palo Methodist church. The Rev. Harold Cox officiated. Organist was Mrs. Carl Wingeier. Casket bearers were Vernon Judevine, Ford Mason, Carl Wingeier, Pearl Hall, Lee Sloan and Ralph Safford. Interment was in Woodard Lake cemetery. Attending the service from out of town were Miss Anna E. Chapman of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Mr. and Mrs. Otto Turner of Zion, Ill. and the Rev. and Mrs. Herbert Gulki of Chicago, Ill.
