July 27, 2012 Frederick A. Chapman, 82, of Orleans Township, passed away in Grand Rapids on July 25, 2012. He was born in Detroit to Frederick A. and Aurelia Denk Chapman of Ionia on May 13, 1930. He was predeceased by his wife of almost 55 years, Helen "Pat" Chapman. He married Neonila (Nila) Chapman in March of 2010 and gained a step daughter, Irina Perry and her husband, Michael and a step grandson, Alexander (Sasha). He is survived not only by his wife Nila and her family, but also his daughter Laurie Chapman-Bosco and husband John A. Bosco of Rochester, N.H.; son, Frederick A. Chapman III and Cynthia L. Chapman of Churchville, Penn., and six grandchildren; Kimberly L. Chapman, Melissa A. Chapman, Frederick A. Chapman IV, Thomas A. Chapman, Jennifer E. Bosco and Andrew J. Bosco, and many nieces and nephews. He is a graduate of Wayne State University with a B.A. degree in journalism and a Master's degree in social science from the University of Detroit. He served in Korea with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Fred was a public relations executive and retired as press information manager from Mercedes-Benz of North America in Montvale, N.J., after 36 years in corporate advertising and public relations. Returning to West Michigan, he was an associate professor of communications at Grand Valley State University and retired fro GVSU in 2000. Chapman was accredited and a Fellow in the Public Relations Society of America. He was president of the New England and the West Michigan chapters of PRSA as well as a national delegate to the association' national assembly. While living in Bloomfield Hills, Chapman was elected to the first board of trustees of Oakland Community College - the largest community college in Michigan. He was also elected to the New Hampshire Legislature where he was vice chairman of the Commerce and Consumer Affairs Committee when he lived in New England. After moving back to the Ionia area, Chapman was elected supervisor of Orleans Township where he served in that position for nine years. He was appointed commissioner of the Ionia County Road Commission, where he served as chairman in 2009. Chapman was very active in community activities. He was a member of Rotary in Park Ridge, N.J., where he was president of the local organization and after moving to the Ionia area, he served as secretary of the Ionia Rotary Club. He was elected to the Ionia Free Fair Board of Directors and served two years as president of the Free Fair. He was also active in his church - SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Parish in Ionia, where he was chairman of the Financial Council and chairman of the Pastoral Council. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday, July 30, 2012, 11 a.m. at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ionia. The family will receive friends and relatives on Sunday, July 29, 2012, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lake Funeral Home, 3521 S. State St., Ionia, and at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 30, prior to the 11 a.m. Mass. The family suggests donations to SS. Peter & Paul Education Trust or the Grand Valley State University School of Communications Scholarship Fund. Interment will be at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Ionia Township.
