EARL R. CHAPMAN DIED ON SATURDAY,, JANUARY 2ND INTERMENT AT LAKESIDE CEMETERY, LAKE ODESSA TUESDAY OF THIS WEEK Ms. Jessie Mae Chapman, 74, widow of Earl R. Chapman, died Saturday, January 2nd at Braburn, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan after a prolonged illness. Mrs. Chapman made her home in Lake Odessa and services were conducted Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the Pickens Chapel with Rev. F. J. Fitch pastor of the Central Methodist Church, Lake Odessa, officiating. Burial was in the Lakeside Cemetery, Lake Odessa Michigan. Born in Hanover Michigan the daughter of David and Laura Every, Mrs. Chapman lived in Kalamazoo for a number of years she was graduate of Western State University and taught in schools in both Kalamazoo and the Upper Peninsula before her marriage to Mr. Chapman in 1909, in Kalamazoo. Mr. Chapman a prominent figure in the Michigan newspapers for nearly 40 years, was business manager of the Kalamazoo Gazette from 1922 to 1931, the Flint Journal from 1931 to 1947 and the Grand Rapids Press from 1947 t0 1954 after which after which he retied. After his retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Chapman moved to Lake Odessa where one of their sons, David, former publisher of the Lake Odessa Wave, lived. Mr. Chapman died in October 1958. While residing in Flint Mrs. Chapman was active in community circles. She was president of the Lady Wolverton Division of the Needlework Guild, and was a member of the St. Cecilia Society, of the Flint Country Club, Women's Hospital auxiliary and a director of the Y.W.C.A.. During her residence in Grand Rapids she was a member of the Women's City Club, Kent Country club and the Peninsular Club. She also was a member of the Lake Odessa Women's Club and at the Central Methodist Church. Mrs. Chapman leaves two sons, David of Lake Odessa and Raymond of Falls Church VA, daughter Mrs. Donald Kinsman Berkley and eight grand children.
