June 28, 1984 DAVID E. CHAPMAN LAKE ODESSA- David E. Chapman, 70, 731 Fourth Avenue, Lake Odessa, died Tuesday evening at his residence following a two year illness of esophogeal cancer. He was born November 28, 1913, in Kalamazoo to Earl and Jessy Every Chapman. He graduated from Flint High School in 1932 and Kalamazoo College in 1936 with a B.A. degree. He married Ruth Jean Matthews n May 23, 1937, in Kalamazoo. He was employed in his younger years by Kalamazoo Gazette and the Flint Journal where his father was business manager along with the Grand Rapids Press. He was employed from 1936-38 at GM Parade of Progress demonstration shows In 1938 he was transferred to Detroit Transmission whee he started the plant newspaper. He was drafted in the Army in May of 1943 and assigned to 671 engineering Topography Company which printed invasion maps. He was stationed overseas for 20 months and was in the New Guinia invasion, Leyte, Luzon and Japan. He was discharged December 10, 1945, in Fort Sheridan,Ill. After army service he worked for Building Supply Company in Chicago for two years.In March of 1945 he and his wife bought the Lake Odessa Wave from Stanley Dann and his sister Francis Pietz. He was the Editor and Publisher until June 1960 when because of ill health he sold the paper to Richard Foltz. He also owned the Lake Odessa gamble Store for several years. He was a member of the Central United Methodist Church of which he was treasurer for several years.He served on the Lake Odessa Village Council and was village Clerk for one term. He was appointed by Governor Mulliken to the Ionia County Jury Committee for several terms. He was a former member of the Lake Odessa Lions Club. Surviving are his wife, Jean; two sons, William of Lansing and Robert of Portage; one daughter Mrs.David (Clair) Anderson of Lansing; five grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; one brother Raymond and a sister Dorothy preceded him in death. Funeral services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at the Pickens-Koops Funeral Chapel in Lake Odessa with Pastor Rev. Therlon Meredith officiating. Interment will be in Lakeside Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the Central United Methodist Church.
