Chapman, occurred at his home on State street Sunday at 4 o’clock a.m. after an illness of several months, which, during the past two weeks had developed into a grave and critical condition. A general breakdown with complications which affected his heart and kidneys, coupled with high blood pressure. He also leaves his mother, Mrs. Annie Chapman, of Detroit; a sister, Mrs. Fred Gausman, of Toledo, and four brothers, Fred A. Chapman, of Ionia; Alex Chapman, Frank Chapman, and John Garvey, of Detroit. Mr. Chapman came to Ionia in 1903 with his brother when the Ypsilanti Reed company first started with the Michigan reformatory contract making furniture [missing word] the reformatory factory. He has been affiliated with that concern since as foreman of the finishing room for many years and more recently as foreman of the spring department since that line of endeavor was added to the concern. With a happy disposition, an indefatigable worker, and with ability to make friends, Mr. Chapman was widely and popularly known in Ionia. For the past [unreadable] years he has resided on State street, [missing word] of Lincoln avenue, and he has spent a great deal of time in improving the surroundings of his home, with an industry that must have been a strain on his naturally rugged vitality. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias and the Ionia lodge of Elks, in both of which he took loyal pride. Because of the condition of State street by the Chapman home, where paving operations have made the house virtually inaccessible, funeral services will be held from the Bradley funeral home on West Washington street at 2:30 o’clock Tuesday afternoon. Rev. Howard Clifford, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, will conduct the services. Friends who wish to view the body may do so at any time before the services at the Bradley funeral home, where they will lie. Burial will be in Highland Park cemetery.
