Chappell was born in Louisville, Ky., Jan. 30, 1889, died June 11, 1906. he lived with his parents in Louisville until five years of age, when they came to Ionia, which has since been his home. Just four weeks before his death he went to Fenwick to visit his sister, when he fell ill with appendicitis, and on Saturday, June 9, bravely underwent an operation. But it was too late and on the following Monday at 7:30 a.m. lovingly kissed and bade farewell to all. He was loved by all who knew him, and even by those who had known him but a very short time. He is survived by a mother, Mrs. Belle Chappell, two sisters, Mrs. Donna Jessel and Miss Sadie, a very dear aunt, Mrs. C. H. Bennett, and a host of other relatives and friends. The funeral was largely attended at the home of Mrs. C. H. Bennett, 238 East Front street, on June 14, and he was beautifully laid to rest amid flowers and tears in Lett’s cemetery by six of his boy chums, Bethel Parker, Samuel Marshall, Frank Kidd, Al Guermend, Arthur Nead and John Getts.
