Ionia - Joseph H. Charles, 71, of South Ionia, passed away Sunday, Sept. 16,
2001, at Ionia County Memorial Hospital.  He was born Dec. 1, 1929, in Macon,
Mo., the son of Joseph and Helga Grey Charles.  He married the former Joyce
Zumsteg March 4, 1950, in Macon.

Mr. Charles retired from Oldsmobile in 1994 after 30 years as a jobsetter.  He
enjoyed collecting elephants and had an extensive assortment.  He was a member
of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Greenville.

Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Joyce Charles of Ionia; sons and
daughters-in-law, Mike and Sheila Charles of Ionia, Fred and Gabriele Charles of
Lyons, Ron and Nancy Charles of Holland; grandchildren, Mike Charles II of
Ionia, Eric and Wendy Charles of North Carolina, Brian Charles of Atlanta, Ga.,
Aimee Charles of Waterford, Rianna Charles of Ionia and Tara Charles of Lyons;
great-grandchildren, Zachary Charles of Ionia, Noah Charles of North Carolina;
brother and sister-in-law, Pete and Donna Charles of Oregon; sisters and
brothers-in-law, Joan and Ralph Holt of Illinois, Martha and Arkel Sneed of
Missouri; several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by one brother,
Dean, and two sisters, Cledis and Reba.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Cook Funeral Home, with
Elder Varian Bauman of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints, Greenville, officiating.  Visiting hours for Mr. Charles will be Friday
from 7 to 7:80 p.m. at the Cook Funeral Home, Rich Street Chapel, Ionia. 
Memorial contributions in memory of Joseph may be made to the Reorganized Church
of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Greenville, in care of the funeral home.
