JAMES CHASE, WELL KNOWN FARMER IS VICTIM OF DEATH:

Prominent Agriculturalist Succumbs To Lingering Illness; Funeral Wednesday



James Chase, 75, prominent farmer of Ionia township, died at his home last 
Sunday morning, following an extended illness of nearly five years. His demise 
has been expected many days and he made a valiant fight against death in the 
closing hours of his career.

The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon from the home and from the North 
Plains Union church, with Rev. George Johnston, pastor of the Muir Church of 
Christ in charge. Interment was made in North Plains cemetery.

For three-quarters of a century he resided in the same house which had been the 
property of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Chase, his parents. He was born in the same 
room where his death occurred after a lapse of 75 years.

On March 15, 1878, he was united in marriage to Miss Hattie Fea, who survives 
him with three children, John D., who also resides at the old home, Myrta, a 
music teacher of Detroit, and Ernest E. of Ionia. He is also survived by one 
brother, George Chase of Muir.

He is a past worshipful master of the Ionia F.& A.M. and past chief of the 
gleaners. For many years he was a justice of the peace and township assessor. 
He was active in church work, being a member of the Church of Christ of North 
Plains.

He was known in this section of Michigan as an agriculturalist of keen ability 
and a breeder of thoroughbred livestock.
