The many friends and neighbors of Mrs. Ernest Chase were shocked to learn of her sudden death which occurred Thursday, July 7th at the Blodgett hospital, Grand Rapids, where she underwent an operation for goitre. Mrs. Chase had been in ill health for some time being confined to her home since last fall and going to the hospital about three and one-half weeks ago. Doctors pronounced her condition excellent and she came out of the operation apparently in fine shape, which was about 11 o’clock in the morning. However, owing to a weak heart, she succumbed to the attack in the evening at about seven o’clock. The internal goitre was of a serious nature although doctors held high hopes for her recovery. Her sudden turn for the worse, after the apparently successful operation, was entirely unlooked for by those in attendance. Libby Cobb was born in Orleans township June 16, 1879 and was 48 years of age. She had lived in this community all her life and was well known and highly esteemed by all. She was married to Ernest Chase in November, 1899 and have always made their home in this city. To this union was born a daughter, Marian, 18, the only child, surviving. She was a member of the Pythian Sisters. Funeral services were held at the home, 409 Ionia street at 2:30 Sunday afternoon, in charge of Arthur J. Fitzjohn. Rev. H. E. Curch officiated. Interment at the River Ridge cemetery. The deceased leaves to mourn their loss, besides the husband and daughter, a mother, Mrs. Charity Cobb, of this city. Among those who attended the funeral were William Batche and wife, Forrest Batche and son, John and friend, Elanor Tanczas, cousins from Harbor Springs; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Vincent, of Weidman; Miss Rosie Cobb, of Grand Rapids, and Mrs. Colerton and daughter, of Muskegon.
