A Tragic Death

Lewis W. Chatterton Took His Own Life.

He Was a Son-in-law of Wm. J. Antcliff – Latter Appointed Administrator of 
Estate.

Lewis W. Chatterton who committed suicide near McCords recently was a son-in-
law of Wm. J. Antcliff, residing a mile east of this city in Orleans.

Mr. Antcliff was appointed special administrator of the estate left by the 
deceased which will come up for a hearing in the probate court in Grand Rapids 
Nov. 7th.

The death of Mr. Chatterton was tragic indeed he was only 28 years of age, and 
owned a farm near McCords.

He was a married man and leaves, besides his young widow, two little girls, 
aged respectively, 3 years and 1 year.  A younger brother lived with him and 
was present when the tragedy resulting in his death took place.

Chatterton had been sick for some time with some kind of malaria fever, and 
after his partial recovery seemed for several days despondent and far from his 
natural self.  His brother kept close watch of him, fearing he would try to 
take his own life.  Friday afternoon Chatterton got out his shaving materials, 
as if making preparations to shave.  He then suddenly and without warning 
stepped to a mirror and drew the razor blade across his throat from ear to 
ear.  The brother sprang forward to prevent him, but Chatterton kept him off by 
stabbing at him with the open razor.  Chatterton also made several other futile 
efforts to cut himself again, and then throwing the razor aside stepped through 
the open door and started across the road.  About six rods from the house he 
dropped dead.  The estate is valued at about $1100.
