Chehansky, 80, of Ionia, passed away Friday, Dec. 24, 1999, at Home of Hope in Grand Rapids. She was born April 10, 1919, in Rochester, N.Y., the daughter of Michael and Anna Pankiw. She married Joseph Chehansky on Feb. 14, 1943, and they moved to Ionia in 1948. Helen was a member of the SS. Peter and Paul Parish of Ionia and a charter member of the Rosary Society Mother of Perpetual Help Circle. She was a member of the Ionia Literary Club, the Yellow Rose Guild, the Ionia County Historical Society, the Daughters of Isabella and the former Ionia Antlerettes. Surviving are one daughter, Julie (William) Van Klooster of Green Bay, Wisc., and one son, Stephen (Robyn) Chehansky of Wakefield; two grandchildren, Kelley and Eric Chehansky; three step-grandchildren, Heather Tijan, Brian and Brent Van Klooster; three sisters, Zinia (Joseph) Andrews of Rochester, N.Y., Stacey (George) Hanley of Rochester Hills and Ann (Richard) Arfman of Rochester, N.Y.; one brother-in-law, Peter (Anna) of Warren; one-sister-in-law, Julie (Walter) Dwarnick of Coplay, Penn.; many nieces and nephews. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, in 1970; one daughter, Mary, in 1958; her parents; two brothers, William and Joseph Pankiw; one sister, Marie Kobisa; very special sister-in-law, Helen Buksa; and other family members. Helen was an avid bridge player and enjoyed teaching bridge in her retirement. She also enjoyed her volunteer work at the Ionia County Commission on Aging, where she served on the board and in other capacities. Helen believed in community service and enjoyed the many friendships she made through her service work. The Funeral Mass will be offered 11 a.m. Wednesday from SS. Peter and Paul in Ionia with Father Melvin Fox as presider. The organist will be Mary Cusack. Interment will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Visiting hours will be 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. tonight with Rosary Service at 7 p.m. tonight at the Cook Funeral Home in Ionia. Memorial contributions may be made to SS.
