He came with his father to America in 1853 and settled on a farm in North Shade township, Gratiot Co., Mich., where he grew to manhood. In 1868 he was married to Miss Harriet Cronkite, foster daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kellogg and since that time had made the old homestead his home until his life went out in the early hours of Sept. 17, 1913. Coming of sturdy English stock he was a man of decided religious and moral convictions and he never let an opportunity pass that he did not speak for what he thought was for the highest moral good of his fellow-men. Always of a kind and genial disposition he drew people to him by an irresistible force and made friends of those he opposed where others of less geniality would have made enemies. His home and pocket book were always open to the unfortunate and every good cause found in him an earnest advocate. He leaves to mourn his loss the wife of his zenith, a son, Fred, living near, one other son dying when a child, daughter, Mrs. Sessions, living at Nashville, Mich., five grandchildren and a host of friends among the neighbors where his entire life was spent which was eloquently attested to by the immense throngs that crowded the spacious farm home where his funeral was held Sept. 20 in charge of his pastor, W. W. Chatfield and his body was laid to rest in East Side Cemetery, Hubbardston. [There is a note on this copy of the obituary that he was buried in West Side Cemetery.] The floral offerings were both beautiful and chaste. Every society in both village and church laying a tribute of esteem on his silent form.
