He was living with his daughter and son-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Elias Whitmore. The remains will be taken to Kendallville (Indiana) for burial." SARANAC ADVERTISER, MI, 2-11-1898: "Ira Chilson of Berlin died Friday of heart disease at age 79." Per undated, unnamed newpaper obituary: "Ira Chilson was born in Genessee county, New York, Sept. 3, 1818, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jane Whitmore, of Ionia county, Michigan, Friday morning, Feb 4, '98, aged 79 years, 5 months and 1 day. He left the home of his youth in the year of 1839, locating in Ohio, and was there united in marriage to Sarah Hance. To this union was born one child, but this happiness was of short duration for the young wife and mother was removed by death, leaving the father and orphan child to fight life's battle alone. He was united in marriage to Charity Woodruff in 1843. To this union were born five children, two of whom are still living, the other three having preceded both father and mother to the spirit world. In 1852, he, with his family, moved from Ohio and located near Kendallville where he remained until the death of his wife, which occured Oct. 12, 1897. He then went home with his daughter who resides in Michigan, where he remained until death called for him. Father Chilson was a good man, highly respected by all who had become acquainted with him, and as his life here drew to a close he left a bright evidence of the life to come. In his death the community will miss a good neighbor, the children a kind father and wise counsellor, but we have hope to believe that their loss is his gain. His remains were brought to Kendallville on Saturday, Feb. 6, over the G. R. & I. railroad, thence to the home of Mrs. Trowbridge, four miles west. The funeral services were held from the Zion, E.B. church, Sunday morning, Feb. 6, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Union cemetery. The funeral services were conducted by the writer. W. H. Fetro." File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/mi/ionia/obits/c/chilson3646nob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/mifiles/ File size: 2.6 Kb
